On 19-20 February 2018 Beirut (Lebanon) hosted the Rectors’ Forum for Leading Universities of Russia and the League of Arab States.

Among the participants in the Forum were representatives of 31 Russian universities and 44 universities of Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Algeria, Somalia, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Egypt, Oman, Kuwait and Palestine.

The Forum was opened with welcoming speeches by the Russian Minister of Education and Science Olga Vasilieva, Lebanese Minister of Industry Hussein Hassan and Secretary General of the Association of Arab Universities Sultan Abu Orabi.

— "Cooperation in the sphere of education oughtn’t to be a one-way street," — addressed the participants Rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University Victor Sadovnichiy stressing that Arab universities are ready not only to learn from our experience but also to share theirs with us: heads of Russian and Arab universities signed at the Forum 25 cooperation agreements.

At the plenary session, Rector of the Russian New University (RosNOU) Vladimir Zernov made a report on the university and its scientific schools, Moscow International Ranking “The Three University Missions” and on carbon nanotubes.

"Cooperation between Russia and the Arab world has a long history," – emphasised Vladimir A. Zernov. — "One of its sparkling examples is joint constructing of the Aswan Dam by the USSR and Egypt. Cooperation in the space field is of special interest among Arab countries: Iran and Egypt are only too eager to finally send their citizens into space.

Many member-states of the Arab League are keenly interested in the digital economy – they see in it a chance to achieve leading positions in the world. For this reason, they are striving to create strong state-of-the-art universities that could successfully generate new knowledge. I am convinced that cooperation between Russian and Arab universities will be very effective."

The Russian New University signed three cooperation agreements with leading universities of the League of Arab States.
